Good Gut Health, Via Science |
 | As stated in our previous newsletter, the emergence of pre and probiotics has played a critical role toward injecting new life into the digestion category. We often see commercials led by spokespeople pitching the impacts of beneficial bacteria, or walk down grocery store aisles stocked with new digestive products.
Consumer knowledge has sky-rocketed alongside the increase in digestive health ingredients, leading the way for a wave of new applications, creative delivery systems and combination products. To that point, Lonza’s FiberAid™ is an easily-formulatable prebiotic ingredient for use in a myriad of gut health applications. Providing health benefits such as improved GI health to the end user and functional properties such as solubility to the manufacturer, FiberAid™ is positioned for the surge in digestive product popularity.
Lonza has maintained its position that while probiotics have led the way for this category, prebiotics have slowly but surely built their own foundation of science. Now, as consumers have learned of the benefits of both types of products, it seems they're ready for synbiotics, which contain a combination of pre and probiotics. The idea of finished products that offer gut-optimizing probiotics with performance-boosting prebiotics has most likely been buzzing in many of our minds. However, consumers have been brought along somewhat slowly. Now, through some unique delivery systems for synbiotics, we're watching the digestive market evolve and open the door to a new group of optimized products. Lonza's global technical team continually conducts research to further explore and support the health effects of FiberAid™.
So why does FiberAid™ fit so well into the equation? As a prebiotic fiber, FiberAid™ offers various benefits for gastrointestinal health, such as providing a positive influence on the microflora of the gut and increasing the production of short chain fatty acids. Thanks to its slow fermentation, it provides direct consumer health benefits, with minimal impact on digestive tolerance, such as gas and bloating compared to other rapidly fermented fibers(2). Simultaneously, it offers technical properties; the highly branched larch arabinogalactan (LAG) structure allows FiberAid™ to remain freely soluble and dissolve completely in hot or cold water(1). Stable at a wide temperature and pH range, it allows for incorporation into a variety of applications. Specifically in beverages, it does not degrade or lose functionality and will not hydrolyze. Along with its high solubility, FiberAid™ provides minimal sensory impact with low viscosity which minimizes the impact on “mouthfeel”(1).
Like all of Lonza’s nutritional ingredients, the health benefits derived from FiberAid™ are based on scientific evidence.
